The included ear clip is a significant focus of medical research, and it is being explored as a treatment for various medical conditions. Using a Universal TENS device with the Tragus ear electrode is easy and stimulation is known for its therapeutic and mood boosting effects.
How to use your Universal TENS with an Ear Clip:
- You will only use one channel of the Universal TENS device on your left ear; please see our model photograph above to check electrode and ear electrode placement.
- Attach the Ear (Auricular) Clip Electrode to the lead wire included with your TENS; the other lead will be applied to a Skin Pad.
- Attach the Skin Pad electrode to the skin behind the left shoulder.
- Place the Ear Clip electrode, with the electrode on the inside, to the Tragus. Sometimes it helps to moisten the contact point with a water-based gel to improve conductivity. The electrode part should be innermost inside the ear.
- On your Universal TENS machine, select P5 for the right parameters for this stimulation.
- Choose a program (P5 for ear clip stimulation or set manually to a Pulse Width (Pulse Duration) of 200 microseconds and a frequency between 10 to 30Hz).
- Start the Universal TENS machine and increase the intensity (+ button) to a level that can be felt but is just below an uncomfortable level.
- Use for 15 to 30 minutes daily for two weeks.
TENS Pain Relief
TENS Pain Relief The programmes on your Universal TENS™ pain relief machine are categorised by their rate, pulse width/duration and intensity.
Frequency or Pulse Rate: If you are using the electrodes over a specific area of pain then it is best to have a higher rate of 80-100Hz. A good starting point is 80-90Hz with a pulse width of 200. You should feel steady, continuous stimulation. If you are using electrodes on trigger, motor or acupuncture points, a low rate of stimulation is usually effective; 2-10Hz with a pulse width of 200, enough to feel individual pulses.
Pulse Width/Duration: Wider pulse durations will stimulate motor fibres, with narrower ones for sensory fibres; select your pulse duration depending on which fibres you’re looking to treat. Wider pulse duration will deliver stronger stimulation; used with the intensity (mA) settings you can customise your treatment. Stimulating larger nerve fibres is thought to reduce the amount of information transmitted along smaller ones, reducing pain.
Intensity: A good way to set your intensity level is to start low and gradually increase the level of mA until you feel a slight muscle contraction (not strong enough to move a joint) then make it very slightly higher. With lower intensities, you will see and feel individual muscle twitches, whereas with higher ones your muscle tension increases; strong contractions are not necessary to feel the benefit of the treatment.
Treatment Modes
Your Universal dual channel TENS machine features three different treatment modes:
CON = Conventional TENS/normal (P1-P6 & PC1-2): In this mode, you can select any rate from 2-200 Hz and a pulse width from 50-300 µS.
BST = Burst mode (P9 & P10): A combination of conventional and low rate TENS, often referred to as acupuncture-like. It features a short burst of 9 pulses (200µS) at 150 Hz instead of individual low rate pulses.
MF = Modulation TENS (P7, P8, P11 & PC3): Designed to prevent your nerves from getting used to stimulation and responding to it less. It continuously cycles through different pulse widths and rates.
Depending on your needs, pain relief should begin after 20-30 minutes of treatment, with a typical session lasting 90 minutes or more.
