Cancer of the bowel is the third most common cancer in the UK, usually taking 5-10 years for colon cancer formation this simple home test will help you monitor your bowel health in the privacy of your own home.

So why test for blood in the stool? Well 95% of all cases of colon cancer develop from benign tumours called polyps, that have been left undetected for years. Bowel cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in the UK. Early detection of polyps in the bowel means that they can be removed before they have a chance to grow into any malignant forms.

Who is this bowel test for? Everyone, but health care professionals strongly recommended that adults aged 40+ should have a test

How is the test performed? In the privacy of your own home! With the sample stick provided take three samples from a recent stool (from different areas of the stool, beginning middle and end) Put this into the tube supplied. Add 2 drops of the solution provided, shake well and wait 5 minutes to take the result reading.

So, what does blood in the stool mean, does it mean I have colon cancer? Certainly not, blood in the stool can be caused by a number of conditions. Polyps are benign tumours which release blood in the colon. Besides polyps, several other conditions may produce a positive test result. These can be bowel inflammations, haemorrhoids (piles) or even changes in the digestive system.

What is the interpretation of the results for this bowel health test?

Bowel Cancer test Results at home

Some medicines, alcohol and some pre-existing conditions may affect the result of this test. Please read the instruction manual for details. Negative results do not exclude the possibility of a bowel condition.

The test should not be interpreted after 15 minutes.

How often should you test for bowel health?  Persons over the age of 40 should test at least once a year for presence of hidden blood in the stool.

What should you do if your result is positive? In all cases, you should consult your doctor to determine the source of the blood. Do not make any medical decisions without consulting your doctor.

As recommended in the Daily Mail 'Good Health' section

Here's what their expert said  "Though this test may pick up blood in the stool it is not an indicator for colorectal cancer itself, this home test kit essentially works in the same way as the free colorectal screening test offered to anyone over 60" says Paul Hurlstone, a consultant endoscopist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.'

We agree, and if you qualify for a free test (over 60's) please go along and see your GP about getting an appointment, if you are not sure - then take this test! It is quick, easy and easy to use and will help you to keep a good eye on your own health.
