What is Tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani which produces and exotoxin that blocks the release of neurotransmitters which leads to muscular contractions and spasms. This bacterium is occasionally present in animal digestive tracts, animal droppings and in the ground. It is able to enter the body via an open wound, although the this infection can also occur when there is a deep puncture wound for example following a bite, burn, cut or even an ulcer, which in many cases be caused by a scratch on the skin or by a tiny prick.

Tetanus is a serious medical condition that can be fatal if untreated. Speak with your doctor if you have a wound that is deep, dirty or with a foreign object, or you are not sure whether you have been fully vaccinated against tetanus. Your doctor can assess the wound and decide if you need a vaccination or treatment.

The Veda Lab Tetanostop Tetanus Immunity Home Test Kit is a simple finger-prick blood test that will tell you in as little as 10 minutes whether you have protective antibodies in your blood against tetanus. To use your test, you will need to use the single-use finger pricker supplied to obtain a blood sample and apply to the lateral flow test cassette. Simply read from a lateral flow test, one line means a negative result and insufficient protective antibodies have been detected, two lines means a positive result and a high level of protective antibodies have been detected. The tetanus antibody test is CE certified for self-test use, registered with MHRA and has an overall agreement of greater than 98% when compared with laboratory reference methods, meaning you can put your mind at ease. Please ensure you make an appointment to see your GP is your result is negative.
